Flawless. As ususal. This is Carolina Herrera, who’s always surrounded by her family: Her husband, daughters, and grandchildren. I meet her season after season, and have never seen her without a smile on her face, no matter how she feels inside minutes before her show.
Your designs are amazing, to perfection! How do you manage to appeal to women of all ages? I feel like any of your design could be worn by a woman who is 20, 40, 60… What do they all have in common?
I design for all women, doesn’t matter their age. She is a feminine, elegant and chic; she knows what she likes and she does not follow trends but brings her own style to her wardrobe. This doesn’t change as years go by, believe me.
Where do you usually start with a new collection and how do you proceed?
Inspiration to get on to work can come from everywhere, sometimes it’s a book, a portrait, a trip, a film, etc. Then it all comes smoothly along with my design team.
You always have Orlando Pita and Diane Kendal backstage during fashion week. How do you work together on attaining the image you have for the season?
I love to work with them. They’re so talented and professional, they’re part of my success.
What are the pieces every woman should have in her closet?
A cotton white shirt, a night gown, a skirt and a pair of high heels.
What’s the most important asset that a woman should have when wearing a Carolina Herrera design?
Not only when wearing Carolina Herrera, but always- simplicity, no to be excessive and always be aware of your age.
I noticed the pockets in your most elegant gowns. What was the idea behind it?
I design for the women of today, and as you know nowadays women are very busy combining their family, work and time for themselves, so they need space and comfort!
Any key colour for the season?
Shades of blue and black.
What part of your job do you enjoy doing the most?
What I enjoy the most is the creative process, the fantasy when creating a new collection. The fabrics, the colors, how to mix them…
You say “Fashion is a dream”, what others dreams do you have?
The most important one: See my daughters and grandchildren grow healthy.
