As We Design Beirut returns for its second edition, Samer Al Ameen - designer, visionary, and as he puts it, “a walking tsunami” talks to us about chaos, creativity, and the collective spirit that’s building something extraordinary. Samer opens up about the passion that fuels him, the power of purposeful design, and the wild, beautiful force that is Beirut.

What is a dear memory that you hold from last year?

Seeing Beirut vibrant as it deserves and feeling the love and admiration for our city in the eyes of everyone attending, local and international guests.

How has We Design Beirut changed you since it began?

It did not change me, it guided me to explore more, discover more and challenge more.

What does calm leadership mean to you—especially in a place like Beirut?

Calm? There is nothing calm about me. I’m a walking Tsumani. I see a lot of resemblance between myself and Beirut, an energy that cannot be tamed.

What’s the mindset that helps you stay grounded and optimistic, even when things go wrong?

I’m driven by passion, positivity and the force to create change.

We Design Beirut has such soul and intention. What’s one small moment, behind the scenes, that reminded you why you do this?

Making a difference in people’s lives.

You’ve spoken a lot about helping the next generation. What do you believe young designers in Lebanon need most today, besides exposure?

Guidance, opportunities, hope and inspiration.

Design has always been a form of storytelling for you. What story do you hope We Design Beirut tells to the world this year?

Beirut is unique, Bold, dynamic, diverse, and in my opinion a force to be reckoned with.  

If you could design one object to symbolise Beirut’s creative spirit, what would it be and why?

Beirut cannot be symbolised with one thing, it has so much history and so much diversity… so much energy. A Tornado of chaos, conflict, culture, and talent.

What scares you—either as a designer, a mentor, or simply a human trying to make a difference?

I am fearless, I do what I believe in without any hesitation. With passion, know -how and dedication, fear has no space.

What excites you the most right now—what’s keeping your creativity alive these days?

Passion, passion… passion.

If We Design Beirut could plant a single seed in someone’s heart, what would you want it to grow into?

Preserving, empowering and sustaining our country.

It’s not about me, it’s about what I can do for my country.
